Meet Julie: From ATP to Clinical Educator

After a decade supporting families as an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), Julie Taylor is stepping into a new role – National Clinical Educator for ILS Kids – sharing her expertise with therapists across Australia.

With a background in special education and over 30 years’ experience working with children with disabilities, Julie is passionate about helping kids live, laugh, and play through meaningful AT solutions.

We caught up with her to chat about her career highlights, her favourite moments with families, and what she’s looking forward to in this next chapter.

Can you tell us a little about your career?

This is my 10th year as an ATP, and before that, my background was actually in education. Now, things have come full circle – I’m moving into an education-focused role so I can support therapists more broadly, sharing the knowledge and experience I’ve built as an ATP.

What’s your favourite type of AT to work with?

I’ve always enjoyed early intervention. When we can introduce AT at a young age, the impact on development is enormous. Helping kids achieve milestones and unlock new opportunities – there’s nothing like it.

I also love doing trike trials. The moment a child gets on a scripted trike and just takes off… it’s magic. I’ve seen parents in tears, watching their child ride for the first time when they thought it would never happen. Those moments stay with you.

What advice do you often share with therapists or parents?

Don’t be afraid. Equipment can feel a bit daunting, especially for families with a recent diagnosis. I always try to keep things simple and approachable, and that’s where ATPs really shine – helping families and therapists feel confident and supported at every step.

What do you enjoy about being part of ILS Kids?

It’s the culture. Everyone’s on the same page with the same values. There’s a shared focus on being the best we can be – for the families we support, and for each other.

What excites you most about your new role?

After 10 years in the field, I’ve gathered a wealth of knowledge that I’m eager to share. I’m excited to connect with new OTs, physios, and recent grads, and help build their confidence in using assistive technology. Our current series on standing is already underway, and it’s a great place to start!

AT has come such a long way over the years. It used to feel cold and clinical – now it’s bright, fun and child-friendly. Watching that evolution has been incredible. I feel very lucky to be stepping into this new chapter.
