If you are looking to purchase or to hire a manual wheelchair, you have probably already noticed that there are two different rear wheel options, “Self Propelled” and “Attendant Propelled“. Are you aware of the difference?
Self-propelled wheelchairs have larger rear wheels with a push rim which enable independent mobility for the user. It also requires less effort if being pushed by an attendant.
An Attendant Manual Wheelchair, or sometimes known as a transit wheelchair, is normally attendant propelled and therefore unlike a self-propelling wheelchair has smaller back wheels. This means that the carer or family member can quickly and easily enable the wheelchair user to move locations.
