Clients who are described as having complex and continuing health care needs are likely to be at risk of developing destructive changes in body shape. This can happen slowly over a long period of time and may affect a person who has difficulty moving efficiently, irrespective of diagnosis or age. These clients are also at an increased risk of developing pressure injuries and therefore effective pressure care is a priority for their plan of care.
Supporting the body in symmetrical supine lying has been found to protect and restore body shape, muscle tone, reduce pressure injury risk and improve the quality of life for people who would otherwise be left to become static in destructive lying postures. This workshop will educate you on the theory and practice of therapeutic positioning for your clients with complex health care needs. You will also learn how to marry pressure care with posture care for best practice outcomes for your clients. This will include pressure care principles in lying and support surface selection considerations, in conjunction with therapeutic positioning systems both informal and formal.
